Some 80 percent of likely Iowa Democratic caucus participants say abortion rights is a must-have position if they are to support a candidate, the highest such percentage of any issue asked, according to a CNN/Des Moines Register/Mediacom poll released on Monday.
The only other positions about which a majority declared a candidate must have were some 75 percent who said recognizing climate change as humanity's greatest threat and about 60 percent who said the same for supporting restoration of a ban on assault-style weapons.
Other results from the survey include:
- Supporting Medicare for All was deemed the next most important issue a candidate needed to support, although slightly less than half said it was a must-have position.
- There is a sharp gender divide on the importance of supporting abortion rights, with 85 percent of women declaring it a "must-have" issue for women as opposed to 72 percent of men.
- There also is a wide age gap on the necessity of support for the Green New Deal, with 42 percent among those under age 35 saying it is a must-have position versus less than 30 percent among older likely caucus attendees.
The poll was conducted from June 2-5 among a random sample of 600 likely Democratic caucus participants. The sample included 433 who said they plan to attend the caucuses in person and 167 who said they plan to attend virtually. Results for the combined sample of likely caucusgoers have a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 4.0 percentage points; it is 4.7 points for those planning to attend in-person, 7.6 points for those who plan to attend virtually.
