Social-Aid Will Not Defeat ISIS

There are a number of really titanic jobs that I don’t want to do. Organizing the garage,  paying off the national debt, and choosing the top ten stupid statements made by the Obama administration. If someone is taking nominations for the latter task, I’d like to submit the statement made last week by U.S. State Department Deputy Spokesperson Marie Harf.

Harf was discussing the war, conflict, dispute, encounter (whatever the administration is calling it this week) between the civilized world and ISIS. Harf displayed a rich combination of sanctimony and stupidity when she told MSNBC’s Chris Matthews, “But we cannot win this war by killing them. We cannot kill our way out of this war." She continued, "We need in the medium to longer term to go after the root causes that leads people to join these groups, whether it’s a lack of opportunity for jobs . . . "

Root causes, now there’s a blast from the past. Back in the 1980s and 1990s hand–wringing Democrats told a nation swept by crime that the only way to return safety to the streets of the U.S. was to get serious about addressing the root causes of crime.

For a while they tried drowning root causes in a sea of money, sending platoons of social workers into the ghetto. They even funded midnight basketball games. Nothing worked — until realists started locking up criminals and low and behold crime rates have plummeted.

Even Matthews, normally a cheerleader for both big government and the Obama administration, had trouble swallowing that flavor of  root cause, interrupting, “We’re not going to be able to stop that in our lifetime or 50 lifetimes. There’s always going to be poor people. There’s always going to be poor Muslims, and as long as there are poor Muslims, the trumpet’s blowing and they’ll join. We can’t stop that, can we?"

The fact of the matter is the organizers of Islamic terror range from rich to upper middle class. Many of them have advanced degrees.

The world is full of poor people, but the vast majority aren't flocking to ISIS. Besides, there are already aid programs in the Middle East. When ISIS terrorists can, they like to catch the social justice workers and kill them.

The Marshall Plan after World War II only worked when the Nazis were dead.
In the meantime, I’ve been having fun thinking of jobs for ISIS members. Two good suggestions came from Twitter — landmine sweeper and cadavers for medical schools.

I think other useful occupations would include human cannonball, contestant on the new game show, "Let’s Play Russian Roulette," crash test dummy, member of the mission to explore the surface of the sun, Great White Shark tamer, Ebola vaccine tester, and
lethal injection test pilot.
