There is also no go-along-to-get-along with the left. Or let bygones-be-bygones. Or even let-sleeping-agitators-lie. While conservatives have forgotten what it feels like to win, the left — to paraphrase President Trump — never gets tired of winning.

If you don’t believe me ask Bill O’Reilly, assuming you can find him.

O’Reilly was fired from his premier position on Fox News after 20 years of leading in the ratings and making a boatload of money for the network. His sin? Being a prominent conservative. The left claims it was because of sexual harassment. But that’s what is strange about the manufactured controversy.

The New York Times reported five women had been paid $13 million as settlements for claims of harassment. Since they accepted the money, one would have to assume that regardless of what O’Reilly was alleged to have done in the past the women were now satisfied and any wrongs avenged.

So why was O’Reilly being punished after the unhappy women were assuaged? Without going into the specifics of what occurred — and I just know what I read in the papers — what injustice remained to be righted?

O’Reilly was guilty of being a prominent conservative. The attack that cost him his job was guilt by association. Leftists attacked advertisers on O’Reilly’s program. The advertisers panicked and pulled their commercials.

O’Reilly did nothing in response. In fact he went on vacation, possibly hoping the controversy would go away. In his absence Fox, now under new management, caught the panic disease and made sure his vacation was permanent.

O’Reilly now admits he made a mistake. Not with the women, he vigorously denies those charges, but with the attack on his advertisers. He told Newsmax TV, "This was no accident our sponsors were attacked. This is very well organized. They tried to with [Sean] Hannity. Hannity actually fought back. I didn't. I should have. For reasons that I cannot explain now, I did not."

For his part, Hannity was attacked after he gave a conspiracy theory too much credence. Kind of like presidential collusion with Russia, only this theory involved Democrats. Naturally, the left attacked his advertisers, unsuccessfully in this case.

O’Reilly, who is still a showman even without a show, promises "bombshell" revelations in the future, but for now a lawyer has his hand over Bill’s mouth.

The lesson for prominent conservatives is an attack from the left never blows over. Science may have failed in the quest for a perpetual motion machine, but the left has perfected the perpetual outrage machine.

Conservatives under attack show weakness when they don’t make a case for themselves. And weakness with dogs, computers, and the left is fatal. The lesson is if you’re under an unfair attack then the only way to survive is to respond.

Sean Hannity did and still has his show. Bill O’Reilly didn’t and his vacation continues.
