California's Leadership Ignore Serious Issues

For the last 50 years the environmental left has been predicting the end of life as we know it, coupled with the demand to give them more power to control our lives so as to avoid the disaster.

Beginning with Paul Erlich’s The Population Bomb in 1968 and reinforced by the Club of Rome’s Limits to Growth in 1972 the left has been fruitlessly warning of impending doom as the world runs out of oil and becomes too crowded to survive.

Now in a classic case of supernatural irony the God they don’t believe in is finally providing conditions in California that make the left’s era of limits propaganda seem a bit more plausible. Or if you prefer the wisdom of one of God’s creations — Mark Twain  — to that of the Creator, even a broken watch is right twice a day.

California is now in the third year of a crippling drought. This is nothing new; in the past there have been rainless eras that lasted almost 200 years. What is new, as Joel Kotkin points out in an excellent report in Newgeography.com — is the most effective solution to the drought problem, increasing water storage facilities, is blocked by self–appointed protectors of nature: “The primary opposition to expansion has been the green left, which rejects water storage projects as irrelevant.”

Kotkin, who has never been accused of being conservative, delivers a devastating assessment of current political and social leadership in my state: “California has met the future, and it really doesn’t work  . . .  As a result, the great American land of opportunity is devolving into something that resembles feudalism, a society dominated by rich and poor, with little opportunity for upward mobility for the state’s middle- and working classes.”

Even desalinization plants, which have helped Israel flourish in what was formerly a desert, are blocked by fanatic greens for reasons that make sense only to those blinded by zealotry. There’s no shortage of ocean water, the technology exists and as Kotkin observes the plants could be built and running for less money than Gov. Brown wants to waste on his high–speed train that will move no one to nowhere.

California’s elites have blocked energy development, driven business owners to Texas and destroyed middle-class jobs. The vast majority of the state now lives in the rubble intellectuals and their Hollywood cheerleaders have created.

California formerly had a poverty rate that was below the national average as late as my father’s presidential administration. Now California has the highest poverty rate in the nation.

One important fact to keep in mind is the limits in the era of limits and the painful solutions only apply to we little people. The politicians, elites and social engineers who caused the problems have enough money to insulate themselves from their own folly.

In fact, they may be forced to enhance their lifestyle to enable them to adequately supervise our pitiful, limited existence. With all that power, who would begrudge them a few perks to go with it, like long showers, private jets, vacation homes in areas with plenty of rainfall, and a generous donation to the Clinton Foundation?
