The city of Roswell, New Mexico — yes that Roswell — borrowed a tactic from the liberal playbook last week by declaring itself to be a sanctuary city.
No, it’s not a sanctuary for illegal aliens, or even interplanetary aliens, which is what the city is best known for. It’s a sanctuary city for the unborn — for “fetal life,” according to a new resolution.
The Roswell City Council voted seven to one (with one council member abstaining) to pass its resolution 19-28, resolving “that innocent human life, including fetal life, must always be protected and that Society must protect those who cannot protect themselves.”
The resolution also declared “its opposition to any diminution by the New Mexico Legislature of the limitations on abortion” and “honors the rights of healthcare providers to object on moral grounds to performing abortions and opposes any regulation or law seeking to violate that right.”
The measure was approved in response to New Mexico’s ultra-liberal abortion laws that provide for the procedure up to the moment of childbirth.
It was also prompted by Democratic presidential candidates who have become tone-deaf to changes in public opinion on the abortion issue.
At a Cleveland, Ohio, campaign event Monday, Democratic presidential hopeful Beto O’Rourke was asked about his opinion of third-trimester abortions, after the questioner carefully laid out the dangers of such procedures.
He ignored the question’s parameters and told the crowd that her question was “about abortion and reproductive rights,” and answered, “that should be a decision that the woman makes. I trust her.”
Last month the results of a new poll were released indicating a major swing in voter attitudes from pro-choice to pro-life. That change came in response to recent radical abortion legislation signed into law in New York, and proposed and pending in other states.
Ignoring those concerns may very well hurt the Democratic Party in 2020.
Michigan-based talk radio host, Fox News contributor, and Newsmax columnist Steve Gruber told Newsmax recently that these new laws have turned abortion into a hot-button issue in his state.
“Abortion, any time, on demand. It’s a game-changer,” Gruber says. “I talked to a woman today, who’s been a lifelong pro-choice person, who said she cannot believe what they’re doing. ‘It’s a step too far,’ she said. ‘It’s murdering children.’”
He concluded, “That may sell in the beltway but it doesn’t sell in the Rust Belt. It doesn’t sell in Michigan.”
And if the Democratic Party isn’t listening, local politicians are, as evidenced by Roswell’s action.
The New Mexico state Senate also listened to the voters’ concerns on the issue. It rejected a proposal that the House had overwhelmingly approved to require physicians and other medical professionals to perform abortions even if doing so would run counter to their own personal moral judgement.
It was expected to eventually be signed into law by the state’s Democratic Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham, but eight Democrats listened to their constituents and joined the chamber’s 16 Republicans to defeat the measure 24 to 18.
Roswell’s action came to the attention of J.D. Rucker, editor-in-chief of the conservative NOQ Report.
“Roswell is now more than just a sanctuary for alien hunters. It's now a ‘fetal life sanctuary city,’” he tweeted. “The truth is out there, and it's impressively #ProLife.”
And if the Democratic Party continues on its present course, Roswell will be only the beginning of a mammoth tidal wave — a bright red 2020 tidal wave that could place the House back into Republican control and keep President Donald Trump safely ensconced in the White House.
