Democrats continue attacking conservative Supreme Court justices — especially, but not limited to Associate Justice Clarence Thomas — to the point where they held a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing last week on court ethics.
There’s even a claim that Senate Democrats planned to cut funding for the justices’ security if they don’t do their bidding.
But Senate Democrats are ignoring what are, if anything, more egregious ethics concerns directed at liberal justices.
Sen. John Kennedy revealed what he believed their real complaint was.
"The danger isn’t that rogue justices are operating without ethics," the Louisiana Republican said. "It’s that Democrats aren’t winning every fight, and they find that intolerable."
Thanks to former President Trump’s appointment of three justices: Neil Gorsuch, Brett Kavanaugh, and Amy Coney Barrett, the high court has taken a turn to the right, as evidenced especially by reversing Roe v. Wade, 410 U.S. 113 (1973), making abortion into a state issue.
Kennedy acknowledged that "I’ve been disappointed by Supreme Court opinions too. But my Democratic colleagues should fill out a hurt feelings report and move on. Today's hearing is an excuse to sling more mud at an institution some Democrats don't like because they can’t control it."
Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, believed the purpose of the hearing was to delegitimize the court by smearing Justice Thomas.
"The left despises Clarence Thomas,” the Texas Republican said. “They do not despise him because he's a conservative; the left despises Clarence Thomas because he is a conservative African American."
Cruz continued, "This is not about judicial ethics. This is not about rules that should apply to judges across the board. . . This is about applying a double standard to Clarence Thomas, and only Clarence Thomas."
A chief complaint was that a wealthy friend had often invited Thomas on expensive trips, but he’s hardly alone in that.
Other, more liberal justices, have taken hundreds of trips, including international excursions, on someone else’s dime — more so than Thomas, even though he has served longer on the court.
They include Justices Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Stephen Breyer, Elena Kagan, Sonia Sotomayor: "None of my Democrat colleagues care because this is a political attack directed at a justice they hate," Cruz said.
Sen. Josh Hawley, revealed how far Senate Democrats would go to exact revenge from conservative court members.
"We had an assassin come to the home of Justice Kavanaugh and try to murder him.” the Missouri Republican said.
"We’ve had credible threats on the lives of other justices. and now members of this body say that we will deny you security for you, your family, your children, unless you do what we want."
Newsweek opinion writer Josh Hammer explained Hawley’s accusation further.
"To underscore this point," he tweeted: "Many Senate Dems signed an appropriations letter attempting to cut $10 million from the SCOTUS budget.
"As the case may be, $10 million is the precise amount requested by the Court for additional security protection."
Hours after the hearing Cornell Law professor William Jacobson, who also founded Legal Insurrection, appeared on Chicago’s "Morning Answer" talk radio show and revealed what he believed prompted the attack by Senate Democrats.
"These are angry, bitter Democrat senators who are furious that they couldn’t stop Brett Kavanaugh from getting on the court, were furious that they couldn’t stop Amy Coney Barrett from getting on the court and having lost that fight, they’re not giving up," he said.
"They’re inciting people to protest outside Justice’s homes, something that’s unthinkable and unheard of . . . "
Two days after that hearing the Daily Wire disclosed the real jaw-dropper.
It reported that Justice Sotomayor refused to recuse herself from copyright infringement cases in which the publishing group Penguin Random House was a party after having received more than $3 million from the same group.
She reportedly received $1.2 million for her memoir "My Beloved," and later received $1.9 million for various children’s books.
After that Sotomayor voted whether the court should take up a copyright infringement case directed against the same publishing group.
Democrats always spout platitudes like "democracy" and "decorum," until it doesn’t get what they want. And then the mask is removed to reveal their actual selves.
And it’s never pretty.
