The Democratic Party believes it’s on a roll after pushing and dragging Joe Biden across the finish line for November’s surprise win, and they want to copy that success from here on out by repeating its formula.
They want to make universal mail-in voting federal law.
Rep. John Sarbanes, D-Md., introduced the first bill of the 117th Congress, HR-1, known as the "For the People Act," which he describes as "a transformational anti-corruption and clean elections reform package."
He must have a great sense of humor — it’s the exact opposite of all these characteristics.
Sarbanes described the bill in a statement his office released.
"The 2020 election underscored the need for comprehensive, structural democracy reform," he said. "Americans across the country were forced to overcome rampant voter suppression, gerrymandering and a torrent of special-interest dark money just to exercise their vote and their voice in our democracy."
Sarbanes said that the bill "will create automatic voter registration across the country, ensure that individuals who have completed felony sentences have their full voting rights restored, expand early voting and enhance absentee voting, simplify voting by mail, reduce long lines and wait times for voters and modernize America’s voting system."
If that doesn’t scare you, this should. Under the heading "Integrity,” he adds that H.R. 1 promotes statehood for the District of Columbia, and “prohibits voter roll purges like those seen in Ohio, Georgia and elsewhere . . . "
Two years ago a federal judge ordered Los Angeles County to remove an estimated 1.5 million inactive voters from its rolls following a lawsuit filed by Judicial Watch.
Removing ineligible voters from the registration lists is important to reduce the opportunity for fraud.
Fox News host Tucker Carlson predicted that if passed, H.R. 1 would allow Democrats "to control the federal government well into your grandchildren’s middle age."
He observed that states control the time, place and manner of federal elections, with some states predictably doing a better job of it than others.
"Under our current laws, states get to decide how much fraud they will tolerate: Florida requires you to show photo identification in order to vote. California just wants you to vote Democrat," he said.
Ironically, a few days before Biden took his oath of office, the Los Angeles Times ran a controversial headline suggesting that Biden intends to "Make America California Again."
H.R. 1 would be one major step in that direction, Carlson observed.
"If H.R. 1 passes, all 50 states will be California — the entire country will have ballot harvesting and mail-in voting. Think about that."
In yet another example of irony, he added that the Jan. 6 riot on Capitol Hill was prompted by the voting irregularities of the Nov. 3 presidential election — an election plagued by allegations of massive fraud made possible, in part, by some states adopting universal mail-in voting.
And H.R. 1 will make it all better?
Carlson added, "According to the Democrats, the lesson of that terrible day was that we needed more of the corrupt policies that caused it in the first place. We need more mail-in voting, we need more ballot harvesting: More corruption! That will unite the country."
Now for irony No. 3:
- The Washington Post editorial board supports universal mail-in voting
- Jeff Bezos owns The Washington Post
- Jeff Bezos also owns the e-commerce tech giant Amazon.com
- Workers at Amazon’s Bessemer, Alabama warehouse are about to vote whether or not to unionize
- Jeff Bezos doesn’t approve of his employees casting union votes by mail
File that one under "hypocrisy," a trademark of the left.
Rep. Debbie Lesko, R-Ariz., told Newsmax that she was one of the 126 Republican members of Congress who asked the Supreme Court of the United States if the U.S. Constitution was followed in the November 2020 election.
The amicus brief filed by the lawmakers concluded, "Our constitutional republic has endured for nearly two and a half centuries based on the consent of the governed. That consent is grounded in the confidence of our people in the legitimacy of our institutions of government. Among our most fundamental institutions is the system of free and fair elections that we rely upon, and any erosion in that foundation jeopardizes the stability of our republic."
To that she added, "I couldn’t agree more."
And neither should any American who cherishes his right to vote and wants his vote to actually mean something.
The late George Orwell, the author of "1984," has to be looking down on us with his slight, knowing smile, and saying to himself, "I told you so."
