Anyone getting reports of Portland, Oregon’s, weekend demonstration solely from liberal politicians and mainstream media outlets would come away with the impression that the Antifa counter-protesters were choirboys and everyone else, including police, were the aggressors.
Antifa gathered to counter the monthly demonstration organized by a group of young conservatives calling themselves The Proud Boys, who describe themselves as patriots — but most of the attention was on Antifa.
Prior to the demonstration, CBS News reported that the entire Portland Police force would be on standby solely because of The Proud Boys, without mentioning Antifa’s violent behavior as the true cause.
“Portland braces for violence at far-right rally,” the network reported, adding, “entire police force will be on duty.”
During an appearance on CNN afterwards, New Mexico Democratic Rep. Debra Haaland referred to the black-masked, weapon-wielding Antifa counter-demonstrators as a group of "peaceful protesters" that is "working to safeguard their city from domestic terrorism."
The New York Times ran what the Media Research Center described as a subtle “whitewash” of the Antifa thugs. The Times referred to Antifa protesters as “anti-fascists” and The Proud Boys as “far-right.”
Antifa is the very group that targeted conservative journalist Andy Ngo in a June 29 brief but vicious attack, in which he was punched and kicked, leaving him with brain injuries.
Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler, a Democrat, believed the protests went well.
“In light of the recent mass shootings around the country, we prepared for the worst,” he said. “I am relieved that no lives were lost. Weapons were seized quickly. @PortlandPolice did an extraordinary job keeping the peace, protecting life, & responding to violence. We are very grateful.”
The truth, as recorded on video, was a different story.
Antifa has, in the past, routinely gone after conservative figures like Ann Coulter and Ben Shapiro, who’d been invited but denied the opportunity to speak on college campuses. They’ve also hosted rallies to protest President Donald Trump, which have resulted in violence. Although they refer to themselves as anti-fascists, Antifa has assumed the very identity they claim to oppose — fascists.
The president is considering identifying Antifa as a terrorist organization.
“Major consideration is being given to naming ANTIFA an ‘ORGANIZATION OF TERROR,’” he tweeted. “Portland is being watched very closely. Hopefully the Mayor will be able to properly do his job!”
Freshman Rep. Dan Crenshaw, a conservative Texas Republican, couldn’t help but compare the protests in Portland to those taking place halfway around the world.
“In Hong Kong, antifascists wave American flags, demand freedom and actually fight fascists,” he wrote. “In Portland, ‘antifascists’ burn American flags, demand violence in the name of socialism. Portland is a sad showing of where we are today. All around.”
So long as Antifa is allowed to continue its current activities unchecked, it’s only going to get worse. As long as Antifa believes it can continue to spread violence with impunity, its members will continue pushing the boundaries until someone gets killed.
