As the U.S. Supreme Court declares one liberal policy after another unconstitutional, there are increasing calls to draft a new American Constitution.
But the only way they could get their wish in a timeline they want is through revolution.
Is that what they’re asking for?
The latest call came last week from The New York Times, when columnist Jennifer Szalai conceded that "The Constitution Is Sacred," but then asked "Is It Also Dangerous?"
She argued that one of the Constitution’s dangers lay in the use of the Electoral College to elect presidents, and as a result "Trump became president in 2016 after losing the popular vote but winning the Electoral College."
This is a common complaint among progressives. Last week MSNBC’s Chris Hayes called the Electoral College a "national suicide pact" in response to a recent poll showing Trump leading in Election '24.
But if it’s a "suicide pact," it’s taking its time — we’ve been at it since 1789 — more than 230 years.
The Electoral College is also designed to temper pure democracy — which always fails — by introducing a smidgen of state’s rights.
A joke goes, "the latest opinion poll shows that Taco Bell is the best Mexican restaurant in America, and that’s why we have an Electoral College."
Szalai then brought up another common complaint from the left, that Wyoming has exactly the same number of senators as California, despite California having a population 69 times greater than Wyoming’s.
As a result of that, two of the three justices Trump appointed to the Supreme Court "were confirmed by senators representing just 44% of the population."
First off, senators represent their individual state, while the U.S. House of Representatives represents the people. That’s why each state has the same number of senators, while California has 52 House seats and Wyoming only has one.
If the number of senators per state were apportioned by population, that would make the Senate redundant — nothing more than another House of Representatives.
Szalai’s final complaint, that Trump’s Supreme Court picks "helped overturn Roe v. Wade, a reversal with which most Americans disagreed," is ridiculous.
The Supreme Court isn’t a political body — it doesn’t rule according to popular opinion — it rules according to what’s constitutional.
Szalai’s was just the latest attack on the Constitution over the last four years. Others include:
Their real issue is that the Constitution, and especially its first 10 amendments — referred to as the Bill of Rights — places restrictions on the government in favor of the people, rather than the government restricting the people.
They want to restrict what cars we drive, where and how we live, what we eat, how we prepare our meals and wash the dishes.
Progressives even want to restrict our speech — what we may and may not say — despite the clear language of the First Amendment, and deny us the private ownership of firearms, despite the clear language of the Second Amendment.
And to make sure we’re living by their rules and restrictions, they want to be able to search our homes without a warrant, in clear violation of the Fourth Amendment.
Police and national guardsmen did exactly that after Hurricane Katrina. They marched en masse, going door-to-door with weapons drawn in Democratic Party-run New Orleans and Democratic Party-run Louisiana, to seize privately-owned firearms.
Citizens were kept in handcuffs outside their homes while their property was being searched. This video is frightening — you can’t believe this happened in America.
Afterwards the National Rifle Association had to actually sue the city and the state on behalf of the gun owners for the return of their legally held weapons.
That’s exactly how fragile our rights are, even with the Constitution in place.
If that’s the America progressives want, they know how to get it — by amending the Constitution. All it takes is either a two-thirds vote in both the House and Senate, or two-thirds of the state legislatures to propose an amendment.
In either case, the proposed amendment must then be ratified by three-fourths of the state legislatures. Good luck with that.
That would leave only one other option for the left — to launch and win a civil war so they can start all over with an entirely new Constitution.
There’s only one problem with that: Conservatives have all the weapons, and liberals can’t fire a gun without shooting themselves in the foot.
Game, set, match. They should just sit back, enjoy their God-given freedoms, and appreciate the wisdom of the Constitution's Framers.
