Dr. Ben Carson: Obama Using Demagoguery in Healthcare Debate

By    |   Wednesday, 14 Aug 2013 04:58 PM

The implementation of the new healthcare law makes Dr. Ben Carson wonder if there is any common sense left in America.

The plan for the Internal Revenue Service to be in charge of implementation doesn't make him feel good about it, considering the recent revelation that the agency targeted conservatives for extra scrutiny, he said Wednesday on Fox News Channel's "Your World with Neil Cavuto."

"I think maybe we just need to go out and find some farmers and plumbers and policemen and put them in charge," Carson said. "I think they would come up with things that made more sense."

Carson, the retired head of pediatric neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins University, has spoken out against Obamacare since he gave a speech at the National Prayer Breakfast with Obama looking on.

"The president loves to talk about the fact that with this bill there'll be no lifetime limits on the amount of money that can be paid by insurance companies, that you can stay on your parents' insurance till you're 26, pre-existing diseases will not preclude you from getting insurance," Carson told Cavuto. "I agree with that."

But, he added, "It's the other hundreds of things in the bill that people don't like. He never talks about those. And he talks about the fact that Republicans want 30 million people not to have insurance. This is what's known as demagoguery."

Carson said he'd like to see both sides stop making things political and find real solutions, such as health savings accounts, which he said have worked well in Singapore.

But he holds out little hope for that, suggesting that Republicans forge their own alternatives. But they should keep the plans under their hats for now because the other side would only attack it politically.

In the meantime, he suggests working to "de-teeth" Obamacare so "we stop hurting the American people."
