Chris Matthews Bumped From 5 pm Slot as MSNBC Ratings Tumble

Ed Schultz is taking over the 5 p.m. slot on MSNBC currently held by "Hardball" with Chris Matthews starting Aug. 26.

The Matthews show will only air now in prime time each weeknight at 7 p.m. instead of 5 p.m. with a 7 p.m. replay, as it currently does, according to Mediabistro's TVNewser.

"Chris and the 'Hardball' team have been the cornerstone of our evening lineup, pulling double duty for us at both 5p and 7p for years," MSNBC president Phil Griffin wrote in a note to staff obtained by TVNewser. "The move will help us enhance the flow of our weeknight programming and concentrate Chris' audience to one key time period.

"And this allows us to bring Ed's powerful voice back to the Monday-Friday schedule. Ed connects with our viewers and I'm happy to have him back five nights a week. I've been thinking about making this change for quite a while and I know now is the right time with the right shows."

"The Ed Show" was moved from 8 p.m. weeknights to Saturday and Sunday afternoons in March, a move he said at the time that he volunteered to make for "a number of personal and professional reasons." The program had better ratings during the weekdays.

Meanwhile, the program, "All in with Chris Hayes," that took over the 8 p.m. time slot from Shultz has had the lowest ratings in the key 25-54 demographic since 2006.

"Ed has proven himself no matter where we've put him," Griffin told The Hollywood Reporter.

The line-up change "makes us whole in early prime," Griffin added. "Obviously we had to make sure we had the right show. 'The Ed Show' is the right show."

The move is aimed at giving MSNBC an all new lineup in prime time. This year, the cable network had its worst second quarter ratings in primetime since 2009, finishing behind Fox News and CNN.
