Award-winning Hollywood Filmmaker Developing a Dick Cheney Documentary

Emmy award winner and Oscar-nominated documentary maker R.J. Cutler has a new movie subject that he is exploring — former Vice President Dick Cheney.

Cutler, who has also received Peabody and GLAAD awards, is best known for producing “The War Room,” his Oscar-nominated documentary dealing with Bill Clinton's 1992 campaign for the presidency. The film’s success helped to propel the careers of James Carville, Mary Matalin, Paul Begala, and George Stephanopoulos.

The Casper Star-Tribune reports that Cutler’s production company, Actual Reality Pictures, has run ads in an attempt to locate previously undiscovered “film footage or photographs of Cheney.” The ads point out that the former vice president “lived in Wyoming during his teenage years, attended the University of Wyoming, and represented the state in Congress from 1979 to 1989.”

Vintage pictures or videos are essentially treasures that documentary filmmakers often seek.

“You look for as much exclusive and unknown footage that you can,” associate producer Ryan Gallagher told Politico. “Maybe somebody has a home video somewhere that we haven’t heard about and that we’d just like to see.”

R.J. Cutler’s most recent offering was “The September Issue,” a feature documentary about Vogue editor in chief Anna Wintour, which won a Grand Jury prize at the Sundance Film Festival.

The yet untitled Cheney documentary is tentatively scheduled to air on Showtime during the fall 2012 season.
