The highly revered and celebrated "The Daily Show" has announced who will be replacing the unreplaceable Jon Stewart. His pair of shoes was widely expected to be filled either internally at Comedy Central or by a well-known personality to match the caliber of the esteemed show.
This explains why some American viewers were left scratching their heads after the appointment of South African standup comedian Trevor Noah to the position.
Who is Trevor Noah? While he has been described as South Africa’s richest comedic export, he is still relatively unknown in the U.S. He has been performing in the U.S. since 2010 on his comedy tours that also encompass multiple countries on almost every continent.
In spite of his international success, what qualifies him for "The Daily Show"? He barely has a grasp of American politics and certainly won’t bring a substantial existing U.S. following to the show.
The fact is that anybody who succeeds Jon Stewart will never be able to replace him. This however is why Trevor Noah was the right choice. He will not attempt to replicate Jon’s show but rather bring the same level of entertainment to a line of questioning from a different perspective.
He has an outstanding ability to relate to his new U.S. audience particularly on social and cultural issues that are in a sense international. His objective and unbiased approach to debate should legitimize him in the eyes of America as someone who will effectively seek the truth while executing his own brand of comedy.
