The African National Congress (ANC) is charged with governing the Republic of South Africa as the democratically elected ruling political party. Their rise to power is largely personified by the legacy left behind by the late former President Nelson Mandela.
However the values on which that legacy was built have failed to become inherent in the ANC. Consistent blunders in appointing high level staff gives light to political nepotism and a failure to be ethical in assigning leadership.
As of the 25th of July the Mail and Guardian News paper reported that President Jacob Zuma’s youngest daughter, 25-year-old Thuthukile Zuma has been appointed Chief of Staff in the Department of Telecommunications and Postal Services.
According to the Mail and Guardian, the position requires at least five to ten years experience at the senior management level where as Ms Zuma went “From a lowly public liaison officer to the powerful position of chief of staff within two months”
The report further revealed that, “It appears the post was never advertised, although ministers have the prerogative to make these appointments without going through the normal processes.”
Thuthukile graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree and received an honors degree in anthropology, an intelligent woman who had the potential to work her way up to the position legitimately.
Graduates voiced their concerns on a local radio station, 567 Cape Talk, saying they are committed to working many years gaining the necessary experience that will qualify them to apply for their desired jobs in the public sector.
However, most find it discouraging to find that these jobs aren’t being made available to those that are suitably qualified but rather to those with the correct last name.
Disregarding potential qualified candidates for these positions encourages the brain drain, where South African professionals prefer to take their skills abroad, rather than subject their futures to an unfair disadvantage at the heel of nepotism by those in power.
