Al Jazeera has received hundreds of secret intelligence documents in what has been described as the biggest intelligence leak in South Africa’s democratic history.
The documents have slowly been made available to the public giving a unique insight into South Africa’s role in global espionage. Detailed information leaked from the State Security Agency (SSA) not only reveals South Africa’s involvement in spy activities but also implicates other international intelligence agencies including the CIA and the U.K.'s MI6.
According to an article released by Eye Witness News the SSA was commissioned by the CIA to facilitate an introduction to Hamas operatives in Israel.
The “Spy Cables” show a breach in security at South African arms manufacturer Dennel where by two Mossad men were caught red handed stealing blue prints of an anti tank missile. The blue prints still made it to Israel and caused increased behind the scenes tensions between the two countries.
South Africa asked for the blue prints back and Israel, after presumably making a copy returned them on one condition. The man implicated in the theft would not be prosecuted or be involved in any legal issues. South Africa complied and the man walked free.
The spy cables include information regarding an assassination plot against the
African Union Chair in 2012 and spy efforts in both Iran and Russia. The information was leaked digitally and the SSA has not been able to identify the source.
Collecting information on other countries is work of an intelligence agency. The SSA’s inability to protect this information has caused major embarrassment for the organization and calls into question its integrity and ability to handle matters of national security.
