Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., joined fellow Democratic leaders in New York for a press conference last week. When it came time for Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., to speak, she said the answer to violent crime is to stop building jails.
First, the Democrats want to defund the police. Now they want to stop building jails.
What’s next, defund corrections guards too?
Let’s remind AOC that crime rates are high in Democratically-controlled cities — especially in my hometown of Chicago.
Because prosecutors are giving criminals a slap on the wrist and sending them back out on the streets.
Democrats talk about police reform, but how about harsher penalties for criminals?
Last summer, major cities like Chicago experienced a surge in rioting and looting in the streets. Storefront windows were smashed, and many businesses were left with little or no inventory.
There’s even cell phone video footage of looters climbing out of from broken glass carrying stolen items and merchandise.
But have we heard anything about any of these criminals being prosecuted for their crimes?
Not word one.
We have a broken and racist criminal justice system.
The 1994 Crime Bill, written by then U.S. Sen. Joe Biden, D-Del., and supported by the Democratic Party and signed by President Bill Clinton sentenced an entire generation of Black and other men and women of color to prison with no chance at a second chance.
And we’re not talking about violent men and women, we’re talking about non-violent, first-time offenders.
It’s true, America incarcerates more people than any other country in the world.
More than Iraq, Iran, Venezuela, China and Russia. But blaming the construction of jails for violent crimes on our streets is inexcusable — especially when it’s coming from a member of Congress.
- There’s violence on our streets because Democrats refuse to hold criminals responsible for their crimes.
- There’s violence on our streets because Democratic policies handcuff our police officers and victimize the criminals.
- There’s violence on our streets because the Democratic policies prefer to defund the police rather than defend the police.
- There’s violence on our streets because Democratic leaders choose politics over public safety.
In Chicago, there have been over 3,230 murders since 2016.
2016 was the deadliest year in Chicago in 19 years.
May 31, 2020 was the deadliest day in Chicago’s history, and in 2020 murders increased by 50 percent compared to 2019. And 78 percent of the victims in 2020 were black.
And what political party runs the City of Chicago?
At a time when violence is on the rise, the Democrats want to defund the police. And now they want to stop building jails because it will reduce violent crimes on our streets.
Clearly the Democratic Party has lost its way.
- This is not the Democratic Party of John F. Kennedy.
- This is not the Democratic Party of Franklin D. Roosevelt.
- This is not the Democratic Party of Harry Truman.
Today’s Democratic Party is the Party of Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., and AOC.
And I can’t imagine a majority of Democrats who are happy with that label.
Eliminating jails and prisons is not the answer to violent crimes.
If Democrats are serious about reducing crime, let’s start by prosecuting violent criminals to the fullest extent of the law and defending, not defunding, our police because not just Black lives, but all lives matter.
