Yogi Berra, the great Italian American, New York Yankee Hall of Famer and Navy veteran of D-Day, famously quipped "it is déjà vu all over again."

Tragically, the recent multi-day riots in New York City, fomented by left-wing extremists affiliated with Antifa and Black Lives Matter, recall the anti-Semitic riots in Crown Heights, Brooklyn nearly three decades ago.

In August of 1991, New York Democratic Gov. Mario Cuomo (1983-94) refused to dispatch the National Guard to quell the riots, which lasted for three days, and which only ended when Phil Caruso, head of the Patrolman's Benevolent Association, told his members if a rioter is aiming a gun or a brick at you, shoot him.

David Dinkins was New York City's hapless Democratic mayor during the worst anti-Semitic riot in American history, and Andrew Cuomo, New York's governor since Jan. 2012 and Mario's son, worked in the totally dysfunctional Dinkins' administration between 1990 and 1993. Bill de Blasio, New York City's grossly incompetent Democratic mayor since Jan. 2014, also worked for Dinkins.

The chief agitator of the Crown Heights riots, starting on the second day, was Al Sharpton, the anti-Semitic Democratic kingpin, whom this year's field of Democratic presidential contenders have sickeningly paid obeisance to.

Fortunately, Republican Rudy Giuliani narrowly defeated Dinkins in the Nov. 1993 election (I voted for Rudy), and over the next eight years, he made NYC great again. In 1993, Dinkins' last year in office, there were 1,927 murders, while in 2001, the last year America's mayor served, murders had plunged to 649. Thus, in Giuliani's eight-years, black New Yorkers' lives mattered, as he saved thousands of them.

Moreover, between 1990 and 2000, New York City's population jumped from 7,323,000 to 8,008,000, or a 9% gain. Between 1970 and 1980, under two disastrous liberal mayors, John Lindsay and Abraham Beame, the city's population plunged from 7,895,000 to 7,072,000, or a 10% loss.

Like his father in 1991, Gov. Andrew Cuomo refused to dispatch the National Guard to Brooklyn, Manhattan and the Bronx, where riots, triggered by the death in police custody in Minneapolis of George Floyd on May 25, 2020, raged for more than a week.

During the first night of the anti-Semitic Crown Heights riots in 1991, a mob of approximately 20 black males attacked Yankel Rosenbaum, an Orthodox Jewish scholar, who was stabbed to death by 16-year-old Lemrick Nelson Jr.

Between 2017 and 2019, the number of anti-Semitic bias crimes in New York City soared from 151 to 242, or a 61%  jump. The perpetrators of the violent attacks, as opposed to the bigots scrawling anti-Semitic graffiti, have been mostly black males.

Inexcusably, Gov. Andrew Cuomo has done nothing to stop this avalanche of hate crimes. In 2019, of the 242 bias crimes against Jews in New York City, 121 occurred in Brooklyn, which is the home borough of Mayor de Blasio, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, New York State Attorney General Letitia James, and dozens of other city, state and federal Democratic politicians, including Congressman Jerry Nadler, the chairman of the House Judiciary Committee (his district also includes parts of Manhattan.)

But the primary responsibility for the egregious failure to stop the epidemic of physical assaults against Orthodox Jews in Brooklyn rests with the borough's Democratic District Attorney Eric Gonzalez, who was handpicked by Gov. Cuomo to succeed the elected DA Kenneth Thompson, after his death in Oct. 2016. One year later, Gonzalez was elected to a four-year term.

While I examined hundreds of DA Gonzalez's press releases between Jan, 2017 and May 2020, I could not find a single case, which involved a violent physical attack on an Orthodox Jewish Brooklynite, where he informed the public of the suspect's arrest, indictment, conviction and sentencing.

Another Mario and Andrew Cuomo failure as governor is the state's stagnant population, which edged-up from 17,558,000 in 1980, to 19,454,000 in 2019, or an anemic 11% increase. By contrast, both Florida's and Texas' population have more than doubled during the last four decades:

State 1980 2019 Growth
Florida 9,746,000 21,478,000 120%
Texas 14,209,000 28,996,000 104%

Mario and Andrew Cuomo also failed miserably at battling infectious-disease epidemics: the older Cuomo basically ignored the devastating AIDS epidemic in New York City, which began in 1980 (when he was Lt. Gov.). and which by 1998 had killed 73,070 residents of the nation's largest city.

Andrew Cuomo's wrong-headed, deadly decisions during this year's coronavirus epidemic, including the state Health Department's approval of the admission of COVID-19-positive patients to nursing homes and assisted-living facilities, were responsible for at least 11,000 deaths. As of June 7, New York State has suffered a mind-boggling 24,299 COVID-19 deaths (New York State Dept. of Health), of America's total losses of 92,922 (CDC), or 26%.

Mario and Andrew Cuomo have served as New York governors for 21.5 of the last 37.5 years. The younger Cuomo has 2.5 years left on his third four-year term, and de Blasio's mayoralty ends on Dec. 31, 2021.

Rudy Giuliani, in an interview with the New York Post on June 6, revealed that he had spoken with the governor, and urged him to "remove" Mayor de Blasio.

In reality, both the governor and mayor need to go, and sooner rather than later. Otherwise, New York City will experience in the third decade of the 21st century, another "déjà vu" massive exodus, as in the 1970's, of hundreds of thousands of residents.
