Transforming Earth Day 2013

Monday, April 22, marks the 43rd Earth Day and, not coincidentally, the 143rd birthday of Vladimir Ilyich Ulyanov, known to history as Lenin, the revolutionary founder of the now-deceased Soviet Union.
Green would be the new red, dreamed Earth Day's collectivist founders in 1970 San Francisco.
They set the first Earth Day on Lenin's 100th birthday and have insisted ever since that it be celebrated April 22. Five of every seven Earth Days, therefore, do not fall on a weekend where working families could join in its festivities.
Environmentalism, these radicals hoped, would become their means to destroy capitalism, replace Judeo-Christian religion, and justify a dictatorship of the collectivist eco-proletariat to purge evil individualists and profit-seeking corporations whose every action threatened our interconnected Borg-like web of life on planet earth.
Forty-three years later, the far-left "common dreams" of Earth Day's founders have faded. Earth Day has become an event for genuine environmentalists, and for capitalist sponsors to publicly show their support for honest stewardship of the planet.
Originally forged to be a sword that would make the left all-powerful, Earth Day is turning instead into a plowshare that sows peace, not ideological class warfare.
Even Earth Day's most heavily propagandized issue and leftist ideological litmus test — global warming — is losing its cutting edge among educated and informed people.
"Climate scientists struggle to explain warming slowdown," reported the wire service Reuters on April 16, noting that "most climate models failed to predict that the temperature rise would slow, starting around 2000."
"The climate system is not quite so simple as people thought," Danish environmental analyst Bjorn Lomborg told Reuters.
Environmental activists and their scientist allies were prepared to impose $100 trillion in new "carbon" and other taxes, shut down all capitalist industry, and impose an eco-dictatorship on the world in the name of preventing global warming.
Their computer models are wrong! And new research shows that carbon dioxide might not even be the most important greenhouse pollutant.
Last Christmas Eve the British Meteorological Office, which has been among the loudest and most dogmatic alarmists over purported global warming, quietly issued a prediction that they now expect no further global warming for the next five years.
Global warming zealots have been no more accurate than groundhog Punxsutawney Phil, who last February predicted a quick end to winter, not the heavy snows falling more than two months later. When Moscow is hit by the heaviest snowfall in 100 years last winter? When England has the worst freeze in 20 years . . . in a nation where 250,000 citizens have died prematurely from cold weather since 2003.
Many of the scientists who most loudly warned of manmade global warming were caught in the "Climategate" scandal, having sent or seen emails among their comrades boasting of how cleverly they had been able to "hide the decline" reflected in climate station temperature records by manipulating the data.
None of these pseudo-scientists has been so much as reprimanded by their universities or scientific institutions for their complicity in global warming fraud.
What should be done? Every one of these fake scientists should be fired. Every study of which they were an author or cited source should be shredded, including all the United Nations IPCC documents that have propagandized against purported global warming.
Public skepticism about global warming comes not from ignorance, but from what we clearly see — that scientists caught lying and falsifying data continue to be honored as climate experts, and that weather does not reflect extremist claims such as former Vice President Al Gore's about withering heat and fast-rising seas.
I was for 15 years the Roving Science Editor at Reader's Digest and am author of a widely quoted book about global climate change. I remember how Gore had government scientists fired if they disagreed with his extreme global warming views. I've watched warming zealots refuse to debate the issue, as true scientists would. I understand how the funding and careers of young scientists depend on their submission to the ruling global warming dogma.
What America needs this Earth Day is separation of science and state. Politicized science that makes dishonest global warming claims to enrich and empower the government is destroying the credibility and legitimacy of science itself.
