History dictates there are excellent reasons why our nation's Founders separated church and state.
This is not to say they ignored the essential principles of ethical human behavior inscribed in the Old Testament or the idea that the oath of office be administered with the Bible.
For that reason our nation has excelled when it has adhered to the Scripture’s embrace of humanity while keeping pretenders at arm’s length.
Where our nation seems to fall short is providing real and meaningful penalties to those who would violate that sacred oath.
Yes. There is impeachment but if recent history is any guide it is now totally captive to politics. It is used as a partisan "scorched earth" weapon to punish those who offend political cliques possessing the power to abuse the impeachment process.
Today there remains no significant penalties for those who fail the imperatives written into the oath of office. Placing America at risk with policies that create an unsustainable debt, porous borders making a mockery our sovereignty, and aligning ourselves with nations that intend to marginalize America during this century come with no punishment for perpetrators.
But --- that’s not to say there aren’t consequences.
It was a wrecked economy where currency was so much wallpaper that caused the rise of Nazi Germany. It was Reagan’s economic strategy, rather than a world ending nuclear exchange, that helped bring down the Soviet Union’s "Evil Empire."
Our contemporary enemies need not plot such a scheme to dismantle our democracy for the Biden administration is proposing budget deficits of such staggering enormity that it will plunge America into financial chaos. If that isn’t an abdication of an oath of office "to preserve, protect, and defend. . . ," then nothing will ever rise to that offense.
We need to confront those who would spend us into historic oblivion, placing our future into the hands of our international adversaries. Moses had the power to punish those who worshipped the Golden Calf and God himself reduced Sodom and Gomorrah when its citizens desecrated his holy covenant.
We have not been given either option but if there is to be an America we recognize going forward it is time we considered what "righteous wrath" should be visited upon those who would dismiss their oath office as just so many words. Moses may have come down from the mountain. American patriots need to go up to The Hill.
