Virus Mandates Politicize Weaponized Control Over Thanksgiving

Who would have possibly imagined last Thanksgiving that social distancing – even from loved ones and close friends – would be necessary; that we would come to believe that everyone is so "unclean" that shaking their hands – much less hugging them – might become fatal; and that inviting Uncle Fred to the gathering might get you fined or arrested in some states for exceeding your government-authorized indoor attendance limit?

Sure, there was also no way to anticipate the unexpected health, social and economic impacts of this COVID-19 tragedy, nor the urgency of responses that have legitimately warranted community cooperation, cohesion and compromises.

Nevertheless, dear readers, let's check our footings on a slippery slope of very dangerous concession consequences we didn't bargain for.

Those 'Temporary' Contact Tracing Privacy Invasions:

We're also supposed to imagine, once again, that waiving our right to privacy from surveillance and surrendering details of our locations, movements and personal contacts will only be temporary. When Joe Biden "crushes the virus" all those contact tracing policies and tools we establish now for "temporarily" interrupting our civil liberties will be dismantled.

Perhaps we can even furlough a huge army of "contact tracers" that are being created especially for this recent occasion, or at least until we need them again just in case to prevent another different pandemic.

Or maybe not.

At least that hasn't happened since the time supposedly temporary surveillance enacted to safeguard our nation by the Patriot Act nearly 20 years ago in the wake of 9/11 became weaponized earlier through lack of oversight against assaults on our civil liberties.

Now if this doesn't worry you, let's add contact tracing cellphone app technology to the murky, messy, privacy and control-surrendering mix.

Any notion that all this human and electronic invasion of our privacy will be rolled back after the pandemic passes is fantasy. Once surrendered, freedom is lost forever.

Tyranny Under Diktat of Authoritarian 'Experts':

Lacking clear understanding of the new virus or good population infection and mortality data, early model-based casualty projections were understandably overestimated. Accordingly, communities and households have voluntarily complied with economically and socially disruptive lockdowns that now call into question when the cure becomes worse than the disease.

Joe Biden has vowed to institute a national government mandated lockdown if he is so advised by "the scientists." The big question remains: who picks those scientists?

Bioethicist Ezekiel Emanuel – who has been advising Biden during his campaign and was just named to his new COVID advisery task force – called for an 18-month shutdown when the disease first emerged.

More recently, Emanuel was the lead author of an open letter urging the imposition of a second and even more draconian shutdown, writing: "Non-essential businesses should be closed. Restaurant service should be limited to take-out. People should stay home, going out only to get food and medicine or exercise and get fresh air."

On the other hand, more than 5,000 medical practitioners and health scientists have signed a petition calling for a balanced "focused protection" approach which would allow "those who are at a minimum risk of death to live their lives normally to build up immunity to the virus through natural infection, while better protecting those who are at highest risk."

Their "Great Barrington Declaration" cites serious forms of collateral medical damage from government lockdowns which include lower childhood vaccinations rates, worsening cardiovascular disease outcomes, fewer cancer screenings and deteriorating mental health conditions leading to greater excess mortality in years to come, with the working class and younger members of society carrying the heaviest burden.

Control Over Personal Medical and Life Quality Decisions:

Most encouragingly, Pfizer, Moderna and AstraZeneca have recently announced successful testing of COVID vaccines that portend a new national controversy regarding mandatory treatment of every child in the country as Dr. Emanuel has urged.

On the flip side, writing in The Atlantic, Emanuel also raises questions regarding whether new preventive and responsive medical treatments should perhaps be rationed primarily for those under age 75 or some arbitrary birthday when those of us (like me) have pretty much ended an allotted time of usefulness.

Emanuel explained, "Even if we aren't demented, our mental functioning deteriorates as we grow older. Age-associated declines in mental-processing speed, working and long-term memory, and problem-solving are well established."

Pointing out that numerous drug trials that have failed to stall, reverse or prevent Alzheimer's are causing researchers (presumably experts) to rethink "the whole disease paradigm." Biden's key adviser Emanuel concludes, "Once I have lived to 75, my approach to health care will completely change. I won't actively end my life, but I won't try to prolong it either."

Conformity to Masked Mandate Agendas:

Quite apart from beneficial uncertainties of conflicted research, coronavirus masks have become potent icons of the community's quest for safety, a visible expression of social cohesiveness, a virtue-signaling demonstration of our bone fide membership in civil society.

Moreover, if you doubt this, try going into a grocery store without one.

OK … please don't get me wrong… even if there is a chance that wearing a mask might offer protection to one's self or others at the cost of inconvenience and muffled conversations, why not honor that convention?

Despite conclusions of a June report in the scientifically prestigious medical journal Lancet that there was a "low certainty" that cloth and surgical masks "might result in a large reduction in virus infection," I'm still good with taking that long-shot precaution.

Nevertheless, let's also recognize endless examples where respected professional journals suppress research that questions or refutes the prevailing establishment canon – making it seem as if all "experts" agree on officially approved policy.

Recall the infamously murky ClimateGate scandal.

Indeed, that ideological politicization may already be happening with a so-called "controversial" large Danish mask study currently unable to find a journal that will publish the findings.

The coming COVID collective will not just fight disease. It will also accrue increased power to the government and private sector allies.

True to form, fully expect that when a President Joe Biden decides on a COVID policy, the entire media establishment will mobilize to suppress dissenting views by castigating skeptics of reigning orthodoxies as "anti-science" or conspiracy theorists.

We can also safely predict that social media will censor heterodox views about masks, vaccines, and other COVID policies that run counter to prevailing agendas.

The only big unknown is whether Americans will question such inflated institutional authority in a time of this and future real and manufactured crises, or meekly obey them.

That's up to you and your special regard for Uncle Fred.
