Is US Media Already Engaged in Controlled Speech?

During a recent conversation with a very close long-time Russian-born and educated friend, now a U.S. citizen working with a major aerospace company on international business, the sad subject of transparently biased media influence on the upcoming presidential election raised an inevitable question.

When I asked him which nation he believed was least represented by objective "mainstream" press reporting, America or Russia, his answer was immediate.

Although he is certainly no Russian media fan, ours is definitely even worse.

Examples of ideological partisan prejudice are especially blatant with regards to raging anti-Trumpian ideological zeal favoring the Democratic presidential candidate.

The construction of an impenetrable media-and-tech wall to protect Joe Biden from controversial public scrutiny has reached a transparently brazen level in the final days of the 2020 campaign.

No objective observer could fail to note a stark contrast during recent town hall appearances witnessing a friendly ABC Biden chat with George Stephanopoulos while NBC’s Savannah Guthrie savaged Trump.

Covid-19 has provided Biden with a convenient excuse to remain off the campaign trail where he would have to dodge some very troublesome questions surrounding a blockbuster Oct. 14 New York Post report disclosing murky Biden family-enriching "compensation-for-political-access" Ukrainian, Chinese and Russian business transactions while Joe was vice president.

The Post obtained the information from thousands of emails, text messages and personal images found on an unclaimed laptop computer now in the FBI’s possession since late 2019 that Hunter Biden had left in a Delaware shop for repair.

A major revelation exposed by the Post was that in December 2013, while "still at the helm of the firm," Hunter accompanied his father on an official visit to China aboard Air Force Two where the vice president also met with his son’s Chinese Communist Party and military-connected partners.

Also among the huge tranche of Post documents was an email from an executive of Burisma, a large Ukrainian oil company facing corruption charges, thanking Hunter for "giving an opportunity to meet" his father who was then serving as the Obama administration lead for Ukraine policy.

Such reports fly in the face of repeated claims by Joe Biden that he knew nothing of Hunter’s foreign business dealings because he "trusted his son."

The media chose to ignore the Post story, regardless that is was published by the oldest and fourth-largest U.S newspaper.

Compounding gate-keeper complicity in the monumental scandal, Twitter, and to a somewhat lesser extent Facebook, immediately sprang to assist Biden campaign defenses by taking extraordinary steps to stop Americans from reading it.

Twitter users clicking or retweeting a link to the Post story were shown a message that "We can’t complete this request because this link has been identified by Twitter or our partners as being potentially harmful."

Included in the shutdowns were Twitter accounts of the entire New York Post’s 1.8 million followers, White House spokesperson Kayleigh McEnany, the "Team Trump" campaign, and even that of Politico.com journalist Jake Sherman.

Even the American taxpayer-supported National Public Radio (NPR) blocked the news.

As Terence Samuels, the NPR network’s managing news editor explained, "We don’t want to waste our time on stories that are not really stories, and we don’t want to waste our listeners’ and readers’ time on stories that are just pure distractions."

Notably, although Joe has briefly dismissed the scandal as Russian disinformation, neither he nor his campaign have claimed that the laptop isn’t his son’s, or that the records it contained aren’t authentic.

Furthermore, both the FBI and Director of National Intelligence John Ratcliffe have said they have found no evidence of Russian tampering.

The FBI is reportedly investigating possible money laundering evidence on the hard drive that may or may not be connected to the Biden family.

All see-no evil-speak-no evil-no-real there-there plausible deniability defenses became even more tenuous with the stunning televised appearance by ex-Hunter Biden business associate Tony Bobulinski.

The Navy veteran and registered Democrat directly accused Joe Biden of lying about claiming ignorance regarding his son Hunter's dubious dealings with CEFC, a now-defunct Shanghai-based Chinese energy company with broadly known Communist government and military ties. CEFC went bankrupt following U.S. government charges of money laundering.

Bobulinski said, "I have heard Joe Biden say he has never discussed his dealings with Hunter. That is false. I have firsthand knowledge about this because I directly dealt with the Biden family, including Joe Biden."

Last Tuesday on Fox's "Tucker Carlson Tonight," Bobulinski again recounted being introduced to the former veep by Hunter and Joe Biden's brother Jim Biden on May 2, 2017. "That night, we discussed the Bidens' history, the Biden family's plans with the Chinese, with which he was plainly familiar, at least at a high level."

A May 13, 2017 "expectations" email document shows Hunter receiving a 20% equity share in the venture and holding another 10% for "the big guy" — who Bobulinski attests is Joe Biden.

Let’s be clear, the press should be vigilant and critical in pointing out errors and failings of all entrusted government office holders of every political stripe. That’s exactly what they’re expected to do — ask hard questions and insist on full answers — but apply that same toughness standard equally.

The day that balanced fairness doctrine ceases to happen will occur when powerful media and tech interests assert total control of an ideological communications apparatus that, as in Russia, becomes virtually unchallenged.

Some will argue that we’re already there.
