Soon after Donald Trump pardoned the ex-Sheriff of Maricopa County, Arizona, Joe Arpaio, George Stephanopoulos was doing the ABC "Good Morning America" news. The news was so fresh there was no time to round up a bevy of left-wing experts to comment. Stephanopoulos was largely alone to report the story. In his solemn demeanor he expressed shock and extreme disbelief that Trump would perform such a travesty as pardon Sheriff Joe. Hours and days later others piled on, including Democratic Vice President Joe Biden, and even a few misguided Republicans who failed to grasp the legal system was ideologically corrupted.
What was wrong with the comments by Stephanopoulos? First, it was unbalanced. Virtually nothing was offered from the opposite side that might justify the decision. The viewer was left with no rationale for believing otherwise than what solemn George said. Eventually, in subsequent news cycles a few of the sympathizers with the decision appeared. Stephanopoulos did an interview with Thomas Bossert of Homeland Security. Yet, most of the Trump defenders, chosen by left-wing television, lacked the “horse power” to mount a full defense. A second problem with Stephanopoulos' first news report was it was an obvious co-mingling of real news with ideological commentary. A disgusting corruption of the news business by ideological zealots.
Sheriff Joe Arpaio was not interested in coddling or permitting illegal immigrants to remain in his county. Rabid ideological Democrats, who were perfectly willing to allow the illegals to stay, pursued the sheriff with vengeance.
Specifically, the sheriff was accused of profiling illegal immigrants. The legal processes against the sheriff are complicated, but eventually a federal judge ruled that the sheriff was profiling, and he was ordered to stop. The sheriff ignored the court order and so a second federal judge became involved to prosecute Arpaio for ignoring the court order to stop profiling. At the same time this federal court criminal activity was happening, several people brought a civil law suit against Arpaio. In time, the civil and criminal cases appeared to merge.
Now we arrive at the other side — the side that Stephanopoulos and his liberal buddies do not want to spend scarcely a second of air time talking about.
Arpaio’s attorney said: “He is being prosecuted for doing something that the federal government has always told local law enforcement to do.” As everyone knows, Obama and his henchmen began twisting the law and the Justice Department to achieve their political ends. For example, the border security people were told essentially to “stand down” and not enforce the law; border security watched illegals welcomed as they arrived.
The Sheriff wanted to enforce the law, and found himself attacked by a government that was twisting the legal levers of power. It is well understood Obama’s Justice Department was corrupt and under his influence. For example, the Attorney General was allegedly caught secretly meeting with Bill Clinton about his wife’s FBI investigation.
It is ironic that Obama and his administration was obsessed with legal action against Arpaio. Obama and his administration had their own problems with federal courts. It had seemingly lied to a federal judge regarding how it was handling the illegal immigrants (on a separate matter). Lying to a federal judge, according to some observers, is almost worse than simply defying a federal judge. The president was as close to being beyond the law as was Arpaio!
When the second federal judge finally got around to Arpaio’s case, the zealots decided to prosecute his crimes as a misdemeanor. This allowed the case to proceed with no jury, but only a judge who was appointed by Clinton. Without a jury, the leftist legal system believed Arpaio would lose.
Arpaio is now 85 years old. He has a sick wife, and he served honorably his nation in the military and as a sheriff. Still the left and their newscaster lackeys demanded blood for what their judges say was Arpaio’s illegal immigrant profiling and not obeying the federal court order.
What about Trump pardoning Arpaio? It was a travesty according to Stephanopoulos. Looking at this from another perspective: first, Trump has the constitutional power to pardon anyone; second, Bill Clinton pardoned people accused of tax evasion and racketeering, and Obama pardoned 1,700 people, including dangerous folks, such as Oscar Lopez, the founder of the terrorist organization FALN. Compared to the Clinton and Obama pardons Arpaio looks like Mary Poppins.
Stephanopoulos in his initial “news” brought out none of these points discussed above. It is an extremely pitiful time for the media and George Stephanopoulos.
Joe Arpaio believed the full weight of the Obama administration had come down on him for political reasons. He said: “If they can go after me, then they can go after anyone.”
