Steve Bannon’s recent quest to unseat all Senate Republicans in 2018 with the exception of Ted Cruz is finding stiff resistance when it comes to Mississippi’s Roger Wicker.

Wicker, who joined the Senate in 2007, is already facing a possible primary challenge from state Sen. Chris McDaniel, who lost a squeaker of a nomination battle to veteran Sen. Thad Cochran in 2014.

But Wicker is no Thad Cochran and has formidable backing from both home state and national conservatives.

Wicker has a lifetime American Conservative Union rating of 85 percent and his level of support for Trump in Congress is 96 percent.

“Sen. Wicker is a solid Reagan Republican senator,” Grover Norquist president of Americans for Tax Reform, told Newsmax. “He signed the Taxpayer Protection Pledge in opposition to all tax hikes — and he has kept it.

Wicker has also been a leader in pushing President Trump’s tax reform plan.

“One of my top priorities is to help President Trump reform our country's broken tax code and ensure that Mississippi families keep more of what they earn,” Wicker said in September. “This particular proposal has the potential to make the economy roar, help job creators, spur innovation, and renew the spirit of the American dream."

Michael Reagan, son of the late president and a national conservative commentator is also backing Wicker in 2018. “Roger Wicker is a good man and good a conservative,” he said. “I say keep him!”

“I wish Bannon would go after the Democrats and replace them with conservative Republicans instead of going after our own,” Reagan added.

And last month President Trump called Wicker to express his plans to support his re-election in 2018, Politico reported.

Bannon’s angst is apparently no so much over Wicker’s record but over his support of Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky.

“Wicker is just playing political games by trying to hide his role as a member of Mitch McConnell’s leadership team, as a McConnell ‘yes’ man,” McDaniel told Breitbart News.

But conservatives in the Magnolia State point out that Wicker has consistently been there for Trump on the issues that are important to them: repealing Obamacare, implementing tax reform, and confirming the president’s judicial appointments.

“In Mississippi, we think Donald Trump is great, and we think Roger Wicker is great,” said former Republican state Chairman Wirt Yerger. Yerger is widely considered one of the fathers of the modern state Republican Party and a backer of conservative causes.

“I wish Chris McDaniel would rethink a Senate race this year,” he said. “And I wish Steve Bannon would do some rethinking as well.”
