On Saturday, Donald Trump's support was plummeting nationwide following revelations of a tape in which he makes crude remarks about women.

But in Iowa, the Republican nominee is considered running ahead of Democrat Hillary Clinton and still seems a good bet to carry the Hawkeye State.

According to the Des Moines Register's "Iowa Poll" completed last week, Trump leads Clinton among likely voters statewide with 41 percent support to 38 percent.

"And Trump is still a good bet to carry Iowa next month," Kim Schmett, former GOP chairman of Polk County (Des Moines) told Newsmax on Saturday. "There are two reasons: first, Trump has a unique and fervent base of support; second, fear and loathing of Hillary Clinton is stronger with many Iowans who feel they know what she will do and hope Trump will be a better alternative."

Schmett, a strong supporter of New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie for president in the Iowa caucuses earlier this year, also insisted Trump "has not and is not having a negative impact on Iowa's lower ballot races."

Venerable GOP Sen. Chuck Grassley, "has built a strong protective firewall for the rest of the ticket," Schmett said. "Good candidates who were once considered vulnerable such as [GOP Reps.] David Young and Rod Blum have developed local loyalties based on strong constituent services.

"The Republican state house majority seems safe and continued control of the Democrat Senate is highly contested.
