Despite news reports, House Republicans made clear Tuesday night that they wanted no part of any “stop Trump” movement.

Members of the House GOP leadership I spoke to during a National Republican Congressional Committee dinner in Washington, D.C., warned Trump opponents against pursuing any strategy that would change the rules in the nomination process to undercut the front-runner.

“Rules are rules, and you play by them,” House Speaker Paul Ryan told me, warning that it would be “destructive to try to change [party] rules at this stage in the game.”

House GOP Conference Chairman Cathy McMorris Rodgers, R-Wash., strongly urged Trump opponents to “let the game play out. It’s still early in the game. We’re still on the ten-yard line, so [the Trump forces] shouldn’t be behaving as if we’re in the end zone.”

Rodgers’ view was seconded by Rep. Patrick McHenry, R-N.C., the House GOP’s chief deputy whip, who told me “let the rest of the nomination process play out. And instead of trying to change the rules, just let the people who participate in the primaries and caucuses decide.”

“If one is serious about criticizing another candidate at this point, it should be about something serious such as that candidate’s inability to compete with Hillary Clinton as opposed to another Republican,” said House Science and Technology Committee Chairman Lamar Smith, R-Texas.

Smith, a supporter of fellow Texan Ted Cruz for president, said “when you just attack an opposing candidate, you are in effect attacking his supporters and that doesn’t do anyone any good.”
