Now that GOP Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers is all but assured the secretary of the interior position by President-elect Donald Trump maneuvering has began to replace her  powerful House leadership post.

Two junior conservative lawmakers (who happen to be women) are the front-runners: GOP Reps. Mimi Walters of California and Susan Brooks of Indiana.

Walters, 53 and a mother of four, served in the California State Assembly and Senate from conservative Orange County before winning an open U.S. House seat in 2012. As liaison between her class of 43 House Republicans and then-Speaker John Boehner, she tried to come up with issues upon which all House Republicans could work together.

Among the issues her class agreed upon, she told me last year, were repeal of the death tax, alternatives to Obamacare, and what Walters called "a common sense solution to the problem of illegal immigration."

"We can’t and aren’t going to deport the 11 million [illegals in the U.S.]," she told me, "but we have to find a way to first secure the border and then do something over a period of time that will allow the 11 million to come out of the shadows, make restitution, and eventually have a pathway to legalization."

Brooks, 52 and a mother of two, is a past deputy mayor of Indianapolis and former U.S. attorney. Generally conservative on most issues, the Hoosier Republican did irk backers among the Tea Party movement in 2013 by refusing to support the government shutdown they wanted.

But Brooks also won high marks on the right for her performance on the special House committee investigating the deaths of four Americans at Benghazi. In a celebrated exchange with Hillary Clinton, onetime prosecutor Brooks held up printouts of 675 emails Clinton’s State Department staff had exchanged with the U.S.Embassy in Libya from 2009-10 and only 67 from 2011 up to the massacre that occurred in 2012.

Walters has a lifetime rating of 75 percent with the American Conservative Union, compared to Brooks’ 67 percent lifetime ACU rating.

With the Senate likely to confirm McMorris Rodgers for interior secretary when Congress returns to Washington in January, House Republicans will select her successor as conference chairman sometime that month.
