As Mike Pence left for Poland Friday to substitute for President Trump on an official visit, administration sources would not confirm that the vice president will meet with the man considered the father of post-Communist Poland: Lech Walesa.

During a briefing for reporters shortly before Pence’s departure, a senior administration official told Newsmax that Walesa “might be in several events” as he is former president of Poland.

But the same official would not confirm any definite meeting between the vice president and one of the most world-famous of all Poles.

“I can’t speak with authority to anyone who will be there,” he said, referring to ceremonies on Sunday marking the 80th anniversary of outbreak of World War II.

For more than a generation, a visit and photo opportunity with Walesa was considered a certainty for any foreign leader visiting Poland. A shipyard electrician in Gdansk, Walesa led a strike of 17,000 workers that launched the Solidarity labor movement which became pivotal to the peaceful end of Communist rule in Poland in 1989.

A year later, Walesa became Poland’s first democratically-elected president.

Two days ago, Walesa made headlines by telling the daily publication Rzeczpospolita that the United States “was for years a good empire that led the world. Today the USA is no longer the main global power.”

“President Trump, I urge you to regain the position of world leader for the U.S.A.,” said Walesa, a Nobel Peace laureate.
