One of the unsolved mysteries from the recent protests in Iran is why were so many Chinese so interested in the U.S. reporting on the uprising against the Tehran regime in December and January.

“For some reason, they were consumed by it,” a Voice of America official told Newsmax on Monday, referring to VOA’s digital coverage of the protests.

Although the demonstrations began on December 28, the official noted that “the Chinese never really grew interested until New Year’s Day. Then those reaching out to our Mandarin [Chinese] service suddenly tripled.”

The Chinese connection to the VOA’s digital coverage of Iranian protests was, the same official told us, “higher than anything coming from us since our coverage of the [Communist] Party Congress in Beijing last year.”

Utilizing such venues as Periscope and Instagram, VOA’s coverage featured translations into Persian of a statement by UN Ambassador Nikki Haley as well as interviews on Iran with Vice President Mike Pence, TV commentator Greta Van Susteren, and Sen. Ben Cardin (D.-Md.).

“And we broke all records,” the same official said. The Iran reports reached an estimated weekly audience of 9.2 million and had a 470 percent increase in those tuning into the Persian reports prior to the start of the protests in December.

As to what drove such a widespread Chinese interest in the Iranian protests, however, no one at VOA can yet say.
