As the Democratic-ruled House prepared to support two articles of impeachment against President Donald Trump, Rep. Tom Cole, R-Okla., House Rules Committee ranking member, predicted flatly that his party would make gains in the House over the historic controversy.

"It's certainly going to help us in '20," said Cole, who spoke to Newsmax during the spirited impeachment debate on the House floor. "And I see several on the Democratic side of the aisle already signing their political death warrants in 2020."

Cole, a past state Republican chairman of the Sooner State and onetime chairman of the National Republican Congressional Committee, cited the 31 Democrats who come from districts carried by Trump in 2016.

"And most were comfortable in casting their votes to impeach," he noted, adding Rep. Jeff Van Drew, D-N.J., could see a primary challenge coming over his anti-impeachment stand and became a Republican.

"Our side is in fighting fiddle," Cole said. "There is no hesitation, no question about the positions all the Republicans take and the impeachment process has energized Republicans like nothing I've seen."

Cole also pointed out, "people are increasingly quoting the Founding Fathers and how Alexander Hamilton was always afraid of easy use of the impeachment process. He felt it should resist the temptation to use it, and it should be reserved for extraordinary circumstances. And Congress believed that — until now."
