One could almost hear the collective wail of New Hampshire Republicans Wednesday, as Gov. Chris Sununu — by far the most popular politician in the Granite State — announced he would not challenge Democratic Sen. Jeanne Shaheen.

As soon as the governor made it official, Republicans essentially gave up for now on taking out one-termer Shaheen.

“At the moment while there are some names being tossed around, none of them would cause Sen. Shaheen to lose sleep,” former State Attorney General Tom Rath, a seasoned veteran of the state’s first-in-the-nation primary, told Newsmax, “She has money in the bank and been around here a long time.”

With polls showing Sununu tied with or slightly leading Shaheen, Republicans from Concord to Washington, D.C. have essentially agreed with Rath and written off their chances of picking up the Senate seat.

Sununu is the son of former Gov. (1982-88) John Sununu and brother of former Sen. John Sununu, who was unseated by Shaheen in 2008.

“More than anything else, I think Chris Sununu loves being Governor,” explained Rath, “He has a sky high approval rating in the job, a record and growing budget surplus and 2% unemployment- And he gets to come home to his own house every night-he's the right guy in the right place at the right time.”
