In a surprise development that has had Michigan Republicans buoyant for two days, the latest poll showed Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette not only gaining on gubernatorial front-runner and leftist Democrat Gretchen Whitmer but now the closest he has been to her since the primaries.

According to an EPIC-MRA poll conducted for the Detroit Free Press and released on Wednesday, Schuette (pronounced “Shoe-TEA”) trails former State Sen. Whitmer by a slim 46 to 41 percent. Another 5 percent said they would vote for two minor candidates and 7 percent said they were undecided. The margin of error between Schuette and Whitmer is +/-4.0 percent points.

Virtually every other poll has given healthy leads to Whitmer, who has a long record of supporting major tax increases while in the state legislature. Less than a month ago, for example, a Mitchell Research poll showed Whitmer leading Schuette by 46 to 38 percent statewide.

“Bill had to handle the prosecution related to the poisoning of the water in Flint [Michigan],” Michigan’s 8th District GOP Chairman Norm Shinkle told Newsmax, “That’s a difficult situation for any politician. And he got hit hard in the primary by [Lieutenant Governor Brian] Calley, who had the backing of [lameduck GOP Gov. Rick] Snyder.”

But Republicans have been gaining in nearly all statewide races in the last week, EPIC-MRA showed. The same survey showed Republican John James in his closest contest yet with Democratic Sen. Debbie Stabenow (49 to 42 percent) and Republican attorney general hopeful Tom Leonard in a tie with Democrat Dana Nesel (39 percent each).

“I don’t know if it’s Trump’s increasing popularity or a belated Republican response to Brett Kavanaugh’s nomination,” former Ingham County GOP Chairman Thomas Klunzinger told us, “but there’s something out there helping us.”
