When speculation was mounting earlier this year that Oklahoma's Sen. Jim Inhofe would retire at age 85, the Republican lawmaker told Newsmax: "When I can no longer fly a plane upside down, I'll retire."

Now Inhofe is running again, and a just-completed poll from independent Oklahoma firm SoonerPoll showed the Senate Armed Services Committee chairman defeating Democrat Abby Broyles 56% to 37%.

SoonerPoll also found President Donald Trump sweeping Oklahoma with 59% support, compared to 37% for Democrat Joe Biden.

The same poll showed Inhofe, who will turn 86 on Nov. 17, leading Broyles, 30 and a former TV journalist, 53% to 39.4% among women.

"Inhofe led in every age group except those under the age of 34 who slightly favored Broyles 47.7% to 42.3%," reported News 9 (Oklahoma City) TV of the poll.

Inhofe has spoken often and proudly of his personal friendship with Trump, recalling how whenever the president has called him, he has put one of his ten grandchildren on the line with Trump.

The Oklahoma lawmaker also praised Trump for rebuilding America's military and took sharp issue with author Bob Woodward's claim that Trump had belittled members of the armed forces.

After 26 years, Inhofe is his state's longest serving senator and, if he is reelected and completes his next term, he will be the third-oldest senator in history at age 92.
