House Speaker Nancy Pelosi dominated the news Thursday morning when she told a national television audience that she was instructing the chairman of the House Judiciary Committee and other panels to draw up articles of impeachment against President Donald Trump.

Pelosi said she was making the historic move "sadly, but with confidence and humility, with allegiance to our founders, and a heart full of love for America."

As passionate as her announcement was, however, it is a complete turnabout from her position only six months ago when the Speaker adamantly opposed impeachment.

"I don't want to see him impeached," Pelosi was quoted as saying by multiple sources among House Democrats. "I want to see him in prison."

Many observers of Congress have concluded Pelosi's rather swift change of positions has as much to do with the increasingly left of center that is growing within the House Democratic conference — and which has consistently pushed for impeachment.

The "Impeach Trump" movement among House Democrats is certainly symbolized by freshman Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y. Having unseated then-House Democratic Caucus Chairman Joe Crowley, D-N.Y., in a dramatic primary upset last year, the Bernie Sanders Democrat known nationally as "AOC" has been a relentless pursuer of impeaching Trump.

Now, modeling their candidacies after those of AOC, several 30-something left-of-center candidates are challenging House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, D-Md., House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Eliot Engel, D-N.Y., and House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerry Nadler, D-N.Y.

Nadler was eager to proceed with articles of impeachment six months ago but Pelosi said no.

"Speaker Pelosi is a great politician and she's always looking behind her at her troops," Stephen Hess of the Brookings Institute, who has worked for four presidents, told Newsmax. The [AOC wing] of House Democrats is certainly one big factor in her present course of action."
