President Trump’s decision Friday to give Iran an extension to work out what he considered flaws in the Iran nuclear agreement was applauded by the largest organization of opponents to the Tehran regime.

“The president emphasized that the flaws in the nuclear deal must be corrected in 120 days,” Ali Safavi, an official of the Washington office of the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI).

Safavi also pointed out that “the U.S. government’s designation of individuals and entities currently involved in human rights abuses, including the suppression of Iranian protesters, is a move in the right direction. It needs to be followed with similar actions."

Founded in 1981, the NCRI represents political figures, academicians, and other Iranians who have fled their homeland, are dedicated to the overthrow of the Islamic Republic and its replacement with a secular democracy.

The group’s leaders are the lineal heirs to Dr. Mohammad Mossadegh, the colorful nationalist and elected prime minister of post-war Iran. His ouster in a U.S-backed coup in 1953 led to the return to power of the exiled shah of Iran. Tens of thousands of its activists have been executed by the Iranian regime.
