Whether Rep. Ilhan Omar survives the Democratic primary Tuesday in Minnesota's 5th District or becomes the third member of the far-left "Squad" among House Democrats to go down this year depends on just how many Republicans cross over to support challenger Don Samuels.
Largely depending on X, several area conservatives have called on Republicans to forgo the Republican primary and vote for former City Councilman Samuels in the Democratic primary in order to defeat Omar.
Former NBA player Royce White, who is seeking the Republican U.S. Senate nomination on an America First platform, called on his followers to vote for Samuels — even though it would mean they would be unable to support him in the heated primary with businessman Joe Fraser.
Two years ago, Samuels lost a squeaker of a primary (2,466 votes) to Omar. Like fellow Squad members and Democrat Reps. Cori Bush of Missouri and Jamaal Bowman of New York — both of whom lost primaries this year — the Minnesotan is known for outspoken criticism of Israel. Most recently, Omar refused to attend Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's address to a joint session of Congress.
"It is utterly immoral and cruel," she said in a statement, "to the millions of lives impacted by his catastrophic actions to platform him, let alone give him the honor of addressing Congress."
Although individual members of the American Israel Political Action Committee (AIPAC) have donated to Samuels, AIPAC itself has refrained from involvement in the primary. But last week, a WhatsApp group known as "Zionists for Don Samuels Against Ilhan Omar" pumped a six-figure amount into the primary.
Samuels, 75, raised just over $535,000 in the second quarter. Omar, 41, raised more than $1.6 million in the same time period.
