Almost to a member, House Republicans on Tuesday were clamoring for the immediate release of the four-page memorandum on the FBI by House Intelligence Committee Chairman Devin Nunes, R.-Calif.

In interviews with Newsmax on the day of President Donald Trump's State of the Union message, GOP lawmakers agreed that what many of them called simply "the memo" should become public. And several expressed hope Mr. Trump would release it following his address Tuesday evening.

"The sentiment [among House Republicans] is overwhelming for the memo to become public," House GOP Deputy Whip Tom Cole, R.-Okla., told Newsmax, "We have a lot of respect for the collective judgment of the members of the House Intelligence Committee."

Asked if reports that the memo was devastating to the FBI and former Director James Comey, Cole replied: "The American people will draw their own conclusions."

Cole's views were strongly seconded by Rep. Lamar Smith, R.-Texas. The former House Judiciary Committee chairman told us "it's always good for the government to be more transparent. We need to trust the American people to evaluate the information."

"The memo, along with supporting evidence from other government agencies, should be immediately declassified," said Rep. Todd Rokita, R-Ind.. "This document is alarming and troubling, and Americans deserve to see it."

Rokita emphasized that he "didn’t see any national security reason to keep these documents classified. I also believe that FISA court procedures need more review and scrutiny and the government overclassifies documents where actually no true national security interest exists."

"I am fine with [releasing] it," echoed Rep. John Faso, R.-N.Y.
