In an unusual move earlier this week, Senate Democrats named a colleague who barely scraped to reelection last fall as their campaign chief for the crucial 2022 Senate races.
Sen. Gary Peters, who won his second term over Republican John James by 1.7% of the vote, is the new chairman of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee (DSCC).
The appointment of this senator who is little-known nationwide comes before an election that can only be called crucial for Democrats. With the Senate split 50-50 between the parties, 20 seats in Republican hands and 14 held by Democrats will be judged by the electorate in 2022.
Peters’ choice as DSCC head was due to, according to Bill Ballenger of the much-read “Ballenger Report” on Michigan politics, “his ability to raise money, YES! Because without it, he would have lost last year. The 2020 U.S. Senate election in Michigan was by far the most expensive in state history, with more than twice as much being raised and spent than any other race EVER.”
Between Peters and James, more than $200 million was raised and spent. But while James was considered the top Republican Senate candidate nationwide and Peters the lone Democrat senator who was vulnerable, the incumbent matched the challenger dollar-for-dollar and won in a squeaker.
