The historic race for the seat of retiring Democratic Rep. Carol Shea-Porter in New Hampshire’s 1st District (Manchester) is now down to a virtual tie, according to the Emerson College poll completed two days ago.

Next Tuesday, voters will either elect Democrat Chris Pappas as the first openly-gay congressman from the Granite State or Republican Eddie Edwards as New Hampshire’s first black congressman.

Emerson showed it could go either way, with Executive Councilor and restauranteur Pappas edging former South Hampton Police Chief Edwards by 48 to 46 percent.  Five percent were undecided and the margin of error was 4.3 percent.

These figures were a dramatic contrast from those released by the University of New Hampshire poll two weeks ago showing Pappas leading Edwards 46 to 37 percent.

Most local sources who spoke to Newsmax agreed that Edwards’ strong performance in the recent televised debate and his dynamic speaking style.

“[Former New Jersey Gov.] Gov Chris Christie headlined a Get-Out-the-Vote Rally last night in Bedford,” Augusta Petrone, longtime Republican activist from Peterborough (NH) told us on Thursday, “1st District candidate Eddie Edwards spoke and if energy and enthusiasm are still  governing factors in winning an election, New Hampshire  is about to elect its first African-American congressman.”
