The president of the Philippines has warned citizens who violate his lockdown that he will order the police and military to “shoot them dead.”

“Instead of causing trouble, I’ll send you to the grave,” President Rodrigo Duterte declared Wednesday night in a nationally televised address.

It was inarguably the most controversial statement in his stream of outrageous remarks.

With about half of the nation's 110 million residents under quarantine and over 3,000 cases of COVID-19 with 136 deaths, Duterte decided to issue a take-no-prisoners warning to violators of the lockdown, which applies to the 57 million residents of the Philippines' main island, Luzon.

"I will not hesitate,” he declared, “My orders are to the police and military, as well as village officials, if there is any trouble, or occasions where there's violence and your lives are in danger, shoot them dead."

Duterte added: "Do not intimidate the government. Do not challenge the government. You will lose."

Often dubbed the "Filipino Trump,” Duterte is known for making controversial statements.

In 2016, he remarked on the beauty of  Australian missionary Jacqueline Hamill who was gang-raped and said that he “should have been first.” He publicly disparaged the claim of his daughter, Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte, that she was a rape victim because she was, in the president's words, a “drama queen.”

The strongman president also enraged human rights groups with his vow to issue “a thousand pardons a day” to soldiers and police officers accused of human rights abuses in the war against drug dealers.

The government has admitted to more than 6,000 extrajudicial killings of alleged drug dealers. However, international human rights groups insist the figure is more like 20,000.

Incredibly, a Pulse Asia Research poll conducted among Filipino voters last December showed Duterte’s approval rating at 87 percent nationwide. Experts attribute this showing to a diminishing poverty rate, a drop in crime, and the Philippines' hosting of the Southeast Asian (SEA) Games last year.
