Whether they like it or not, Republicans in the Golden State’s 50th District (San Diego) are stuck with Rep. Duncan D. Hunter on their November ballot following his sensational 47-page indictment for misuse of federal campaign funds Tuesday.

“He knew it was coming for a long time,” a veteran Southern California GOP activist who requested anonymity told Newsmax, noting that Hunter has been under investigation for two years. “Now we have to [vote for him] in order for him to then resign and have a special election.”

He was referring to the Golden State’s French-style electoral system in which all candidates appear on the same primary ballot and the two top vote-getters — regardless of party — meet in a November runoff.

Since the contest in California is technically nonpartisan, no party can replace a candidate on the November ballot.

The embattled Hunter faces a Bernie Sanders Democrat and former U.S. Department of Labor official Ammar Campa-Najjar, who undoubtedly got a boost from the indictment of the five-term congressman and wife Margaret.

In a report that made headlines nationwide, the Hunters were indicted for misusing campaign funds for a variety of things unrelated to his re-election bid.  These include their daughter’s tuition in private school, dinners at numerous restaurants, and transporting their pet rabbit across the country.

Hunter has denounced the indictment as “politically motivated.”  Democrats were quick to point out that the indictment was brought to the grand jury by Trump-appointed U.S. Attorney Adam Braverman.

Pointing out that Trump carried the 50th District with 54 percent of the vote and Hunter won his last re-election with 63 percent, several California Republicans told Newsmax they are still confident the congressman can win.
