Supporters of Rep. Dana Rohrabacher finally had something to smile about on Tuesday morning, as the latest poll of California's 48th District in Orange County showed the controversial congressman taking the lead over Democrat Harley Rouda.

According to the just-completed Monmouth University poll, Rohrabacher, who won his first term in 1988, edged businessman and first-time candidate Rouda by 50 to 48 percent districtwide.

The same poll in July showed Rouda beating Rohrabacher by 47 to 45 percent — a stunning result in one of the two most Republican U.S. House districts in the Golden State. Two weeks ago, a New York Times/Siena College poll showed the two candidates tied at 45 percent each.

“It has been close because the left is going all out to beat Dana,” California’s GOP National Committeeman Shawn Steel, one of Rohrabacher’s closest friends, told Newsmax. “When you have [Silicon Valley leftist billionaire] Tom Steyer financing 1,000 precinct workers in Orange County and the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee spending $3 million on Rouda’s behalf, you know it’s going to be a close race.”

Also a potential threat to Rohrabacher’s re-election is what his friends call “the Russian thing--” the congressman’s unabashed championship of Russia and its strongman-president Vladimir Putin.

For several years, the Californian (who has a picture of himself arm-wrestling with the then-Vice Mayor of Petersburg Putin in the 1990’s) has criticized sanctions against Russia and considers Moscow a potential ally in the battle against radical Islam.

“Putin’s Favorite Congressman,” blared the headline of a Rohrabacher profile in “Politico” last year.  Democrats and other opponents of the veteran incumbent agree with that assessment and in terms of fund-raising, “Dana has been outraised by 5-to-1,” according to Shawn Steel.

But Steel also points out that “Dana went home religiously every weekend this year, held town meetings throughout the district, and nobody mentioned Putin or Russia.”
