White House senior adviser Jared Kushner took an unannounced trip to Saudi Arabia late last week to discuss a Middle East peace initiative, a White House official told Politico.

Kushner, who is also President Donald Trump’s son-in-law, left Washington, D.C., on Wednesday and returned Saturday. He met with officials from Egypt, Jordan and the UAE, and was accompanied by Trump's special envoy to the Israeli-Palestinian peace process, Jason Greenblatt, and Deputy National Security Adviser Dina Powell.

The same group visited Saudi Arabia and other countries in the region earlier this summer. It is the third trip to the region for Kushner, who has been tasked with Middle East diplomacy.

“The Senior Advisor to the President, the Deputy National Security Advisor for Strategy, and the Special Representative for International Negotiations recently returned from Saudi Arabia,” the White House official told Politico in a statement.

“The Senior Advisor has also been in frequent contact with officials from Israel, the Palestinian Authority, Egypt, United Arab Emirates, Jordan and Saudi Arabia.”

Trump in the past said he is committed to finding a lasting solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, something he has referred to as “the ultimate deal.”
