Zuckerman: Economy Will Overwhelm Whoever Wins

By    |   Tuesday, 04 November 2008 11:54 AM EST

Mort Zuckerman, publisher of U.S. News and World Report, told MSNBC Tuesday that people are definitely engaged in this election in a way they’ve never been before.

“Without question, the intensity of the race, and the uniqueness of Barack Obama’s candidacy have really brought enormous numbers of people into the political process.” Zuckerman said that something similar happened for John F. Kennedy, but nothing like this. “It’s really quite a tribute to both the campaigns, and to Barack Obama."

Anchor Mika Brzeznski said, “If [Obama] wins, it would be a tribute to him, but there is a path to victory … for John McCain. There are those coming on our broadcast saying it isn’t over yet, and it’s not just Republicans.”

Zuckerman replied, “It ain’t over ‘til it’s over. But I tell you, I don’t envy anybody who ends up in that office. He is going to have a terrific challenge, in terms of where the economy is and where it’s going. And that’s just going to overwhelm everything he’s going to do in office for the first several years. It’s going to be overwhelming.“
