The Washington Post Company has launched an online magazine designed primarily for blacks, with news and commentary on politics and culture.
Henry Louis Gates Jr., a professor of African and African-American studies at Harvard University, is the editor of the magazine, called The Root.
Former New York Times reporter Lynette Clemetson is managing editor of The Root, which is based in Washington, D.C., and is offered free to readers.
On Monday, the first day the magazine was up and running, it featured commentary on the presidential race by Harvard sociologist William Julius Wilson and others.
Much of the news and commentary “will not have an explicitly black angle,” Clemetson told the New York Times.
A section of the magazine called “Roots” will provide information about DNA testing and assist users in mapping their family trees.
“Family history through genealogy is a critical piece to Africa-American heritage,” Gates said in a statement.
“To embrace the future it is essential to understand one’s past.”
