Obama Says 'System Didn't Work' at State Dinner

Thursday, 03 December 2009 03:21 PM EST

WASHINGTON -- President Barack Obama says "the system didn't work the way it was supposed to" at last week's White House state dinner, where an uninvited Virginia couple got in and shook hands with the president.

Still, Obama says he feels safe in the White House. In a joint interview Thursday with USA Today and the Detroit Free Press, Obama said, "I could not have more confidence in the Secret Service."

The president says he trusts the Secret Service 100 percent _ "not just with me, but with my wife and my children."

The head of the Secret Service said during a congressional hearing that the security breach was a mistake and an aberration, and that three uniformed officers have been put on administrative leave. Mark Sullivan said the Secret Service must have a "100 percent" performance record.
