Friday, 22 April 2011 10:20 AM EDT

Donald Trump debuted atop a new Gallup survey released Friday that, for the first time, listed the billionaire businessman as potential Republican presidential hopeful. Trump garnered 16 percent of the support in the survey of Republicans and Republican-leaning independents, tying former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, according to Gallup.

Trump, Gallup, Huckabee, Romney, PalinFormer Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney finished third, with 13 percent, and former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin snagged 10 percent. The rest of the field came in at 6 percent or less in the poll, based on telephone interviews April 15 to 20 with a random sample of 1,047 Republicans and Republican-leaning independents.

Trump tops the leader board among moderate and liberal Republicans, with 21 percent supporting him. Huckabee is ahead among conservative Republicans.

Previous Gallup surveys monitoring the GOP preferences didn’t include Trump. Without Trump in the race, Huckabee’s support climbs to 19 percent, followed by Romney at 16 percent and Palin, at 14 percent. Those numbers are similar to what Gallup found in earlier surveys without Trump.

The biggest change in this survey was the drop in support for former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich. He fell from 10 percent support to 7 percent.
