Woods's Caddy: I Didn't Know; Don't Fire Me

Monday, 14 December 2009 10:53 AM EST

Tiger Woods's Kiwi caddy, Steve Williams, contending that he had no idea that his boss was engaging in the off-course dalliances that have bared his personal life to the world, is enraged at a U.S. sportswriter who says the New Zealander ought to be axed because he must have known.

After Woods announced his "indefinite break" from golf Friday to try to save his marriage after allegations of rampant affairs, Williams broke his silence and told Sunday News that the ever-growing scandal has placed pressure on his own wife and family.

Lashed out at a leading American sports writer who said he should be axed as Woods's caddy because it was hard to believe the affairs could have gone on without his "help or knowledge." Williams, the world's No. 1 golfer's long-time caddy, works at the behest of the golfer himself.

Williams, who said Woods had admitted to him he had "a problem," said he would quit golf altogether if he were fired.
