Sununu Gives Al Hunt the Heimlich

New Hampshire Sen. John E. Sununu dealt quickly with a crisis when he performed the Heimlich maneuver to save a journalist who was choking on a piece of chicken.

Sununu — son of John H. Sununu, White House chief of staff under President George H.W. Bush — was dining with Al Hunt, executive editor for Washington at Bloomberg News, along with Hunt’s wife Judy Woodruff, columnist Robert Novak and others in Manchester, N.H., on Friday night when the chicken got caught in Hunt’s windpipe.

Hunt stood up from the table trying to dislodge the meat when Sununu “quickly jumped up, put his arms around me and did the maneuver. Within two seconds, it came out,” Hunt told the New Hampshire Union Leader.

“It was really, really quick. Some people were saying they didn’t even know it had happened. John was terrific.”
