GOP Looks for Signs of New Obama Approach

Sunday, 23 January 2011 11:08 AM EST

WASHINGTON (AP) — Top Republicans in Congress want to hear talk of spending cuts and deficit reduction from President Barack Obama in his State of the Union address.

Senate GOP leader Mitch McConnell and House Majority Leader Eric Cantor say their party's election gains show that the public wants the Democratic administration to rein in spending.

Obama is expected to outline an agenda to create jobs and make the U.S. more competitive. He plans to promote spending on innovation while trying to reduce the deficit and cooperate with Republicans.

McConnell, R-Ky., says it's not the time to pump up spending. He says Obama ran as a moderate and should govern that way.

Cantor was on NBC's "Meet the Press," while McConnell was on "Fox News Sunday."
