Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker’s battle with public sector unions has propelled him to the front of the pack in the GOP presidential sweepstakes.
Walker’s favorable/unfavorable spread is a plus 44 percent compared to Mike Huckabee at 42, Sarah Palin at 40 and Mitt Romney at 21, Public Policy Polling reports.
The poll suggests that the governor “could be a serious contender for the Republican presidential nomination.” The polling group added that “none of the folks most seriously considering this race have been able to get any momentum yet, leaving a lot of room for a fresher face to enter and get a lot of traction. Walker's crusade against the unions has put him in a position where he could be that guy.”
Walker’s good standing with Republican voters has not translated to the electorate in general but the numbers are close. Overall, 34 percent of Americans have a favorable opinion of Walker while 39 percent have a negative view. Unions are viewed favorably by 46 percent compared to 40 percent who view unions negatively and 45 percent side with the Wisconsin unions and 41 percent with Walker, the poll found.
“These findings all closely mirror what we found in the state itself- voters are extremely polarized but do side narrowly with the workers,” PPP said.
